Ho, Ho, Ho, It’s the Holidays!
December is here again, and so are all the trimmings that go with the holidays; shopping, parties, programs, family gatherings, special events, and the list goes on. In the midst of all of this, teachers are trying to finish up the last few days of school before Christmas break and keep students engaged in learning. How do you keep your life balanced without becoming a “Bah Humbug”?
For a music teacher, this is especially hard. I personally have been previewing and/or writing Christmas music since June. Since the beginning of November, we’ve been working on Christmas programs and scheduling extra rehearsals. I am exhausted, and get grumpy. (Just ask my husband!)
Here are a few tips that help me get through this busy time of year and get revived!
C – Cancel too many extra events. Don’t over schedule yourself! You do not have to attend every party or program you are invited to. This year since we are traveling during Christmas, I put up snowmen decorations and didn’t put up my Christmas decorations – a first for many years. We are sending out New Years cards after we get back from vacation. It’s okay -you really don’t have to do everything that comes across your path during the holidays! You will only stress yourself out!
A – Arrange some time for yourself – a massage, manicure/pedicure, go shopping, take a nap, read a book, bake cookies, play your favorite game or go out to eat. Make some time for whatever you enjoy! On the night of my Christmas program, I usually come home, take a short nap, have a nice meal prepared, get dressed up and go enjoy performing the program! I realize that won’t work for everyone, but it helps me be refreshed and have a positive attitude!
R – Remember others. Do something nice for a co-worker, your principal, a neighbor, or family member. Volunteer to ring the Salvation Army bell, work at a soup kitchen, or visit a nursing home. Getting your mind off of yourself sure helps put life into perspective. Someone always has it worse than we do.
E – Enjoy the holiday season! If you don’t have any family traditions, then start one! Try baking cookies, watch a Christmas movie together, or drive to see the local Christmas lights. Don’t go overboard, but don’t become a “Bah Humbug”. Find the joy in the season. Look for the good things during this season. There are so many.
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year!
Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.
