Courage is boldly doing something or going somewhere that is a bit scary or intimidating to you. The song “Courage” explores the boldness that it takes to be an astronaut, soldier, soloist, or even try a food that doesn’t appeal to you! That takes courage! This song is to the tune of the spiritual “Michael Row the Boat Ashore”.

- Identify local heroes such as astronauts, policemen, ENT’s ,etc. and discuss how their job involves courage. Write thank you notes to these local heroes to let your students express their appreciation for that courage.
- Brainstorm ways to overcome stage fright when performing; singing, playing an instrument, etc. and then use those strategies when performing your next program or special event at school.
- Study the background of the song “Michael Row the Boat Ashore”. Identify other spirituals and compare the songs and stories behind them. Assign your students a song to write a report on. Present a program on spirituals and their stories.
